News from the School and Daycare Center in Villa Candelaria, Cochabamba, Bolivia
We had a great new start in the school this year, with 253 students from 1st grade to 8th grade. This is a unique sight to see the students coming down from their homes, brothers and sisters holding hands smiling, because it is another day they can come to school.
Teacher with the open arms welcoming the students. Because of you, over 150 of these children receive support in many ways from scholarships, to school supplies, and for the most needy, they receive school breakfast and lunch.
Over 200 students are learning computer skills in the computer lab. Students from 3rd grade are receiving instruction on how computers work and are learning to type with all their fingers. I was shown work completed by the students in the 8th grade. They consisted of beautiful presentations, research in mammals, power point presentation on payroll efficiency and others. They are capable to work with Word and Excel.
Again this year, we purchased 250 books for the library. We currently have 48 student members in the Readers Club. Last year, the most books read by one student was 32, the next most books read was 28, and so on. I don’t ever remember seeing so many children so much in love with reading! We had a special opportunity this year to take the children on a field trip to a center where Mrs. Salina Suares, author of many children’s books, read her last book and took questions from the children about her book. Afterward, I took them to an ice cream restaurant for a treat. For some of the children, this was their first time in this restaurant, which is known for their ice cream. The kids had a wonderful time. I made a promise to take the children again next year and they are already reading in anticipation and excitement for next year’s field trip.
In the Daycare Center, we have 178 children from 3 months old to kindergarten. This year on Children’s Day, the parents and teachers put a wonderful show for them. Afterward, they had cake and ice cream. I want to pass on to you their genuine gratitude for having a place like this to leave their children, where they will be taken care of and loved. For me to look at their beautiful faces, brings joy and tears to my eyes because I too am so grateful for you that care for these children and you show it by your contribution to the Bolivian Children’s Fund.
Every day challenges make us work harder. Directors, teachers and volunteers are willing to sacrifice better wages and opportunities, because they can make a difference in the lives of these children by teaching not only the things they need to learn but also God’s love for all of us.
On behalf of the children at Villa Candelaria, the Board of Directors and myself, we thank you for you ongoing support and your love for them.
Gratefully,
Edmund Claros
President and Founder, Bolivian Children’s Fund
